Cenote Ik Kil

Yucatán

4.6 (2605)

Three kilometers from Chichén Itzá, Ik Kil opens up like a giant circular well in the earth, about 60 meters across, with sheer rock walls draped in roots and hanging vines that reach toward the water. It is not a hidden spot: with more than fifteen thousand Google reviews, this is one of the most visited cenotes in Yucatán, and it feels like it. You descend a wet stone staircase — hold the handrail, because it gets slippery — until you reach a platform where you can jump from different heights or enter by the metal ladder. The water is cool, dark at the center, and greener near the edges where the roots form natural curtains. Life jackets are mandatory and included, so there is no way to enter without one. One of the things you notice most is the sound. The cenote works like a natural echo chamber. During high season, when tour groups fill the water, the experience changes completely. Arriving before 9 a.m. or after 3 p.m. makes the difference between a calm swim and sharing the water with dozens of people.
