Ek Balam

Ekbalam, Yucatán

4.7 (1172)

Ek Balam's Acropolis rises 32 meters and visitors can still climb it. That alone sets it apart from most archaeological sites in Yucatán, where access to the main pyramids has been restricted for years. From the top, the jungle stretches out in every direction. Inside the main pyramid lies the funerary chamber of Ukit Kan Le'k Tok', ruler of Ek Balam, with remarkably preserved polychrome stucco — white reliefs of winged figures and glyphs protected under a cover. This is not a place to rush through. The site is managed by INAH and can still be explored with a good sense of freedom. The structures are well preserved, crowds tend to stay manageable even in high season, and if you arrive before 9 a.m. there is a good chance you will have the Acropolis almost to yourself.
